Monitoring of emissions from livestock farming

Although livestock farming is belonging to one of the oldest and most elementary professions on this planet, nowadays in view of an apparent climate change, even the emissions of our animals are under close investigation. The accurate determination of the emissions from mobile sources is however not as easy as the determination from stationary sources e.g. industrial stacks.

For this reason, the validation of the sampling and measuring equipment is currently under investigation at farms in The Netherlands in order to determine the most reliable and accurate procedures for measuring the ammonia and methane emissions from e.g cows, calves and pigs.

A number of photo-acoustic analyzers of LSE Monitors (daughter company of Synspec BV), that are dedicated for the accurate and robust measurement of methane and ammonia levels, have been selected for this study.

24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the ammonia and methane levels in the stables are measured. In combination with aeriation data, the emissions are being calculated, logged and immediately communicated. In this way, the farmer observes the real-time performance of the stables with respect to emissions. The goal is to yield the farmer more insight in his footprint and help them to reduce emissions in accordance with legislation. At the same time, the environment and animal welfare is improved.
